We are happy to share some insights about Astronomer drawn from our latest market research, Ventana Research Buyers Guide: DataOps, which assesses how well vendors’ offerings meet buyers’ requirements.
We recently published four Ventana Research 2023 DataOps Buyers Guides, an assessment of technology vendors and products that provide individual and combined DataOps, data observability, data orchestration and data pipeline platform support.
At Ventana Research, we continue to believe that, for most use-cases, there is a clear choice for DataOps platforms for any use in your organization. We developed four technology assessments and buyers guides to focus on overall DataOps requirements as well as specific data observability, data orchestration and data pipeline platform use-cases.
In all of our Buyers Guides, we utilize a structured research methodology called the Value Index that includes evaluation categories designed to reflect real-world criteria incorporated in a request for proposal (RFP) and vendor selection process for DataOps. We evaluated Astronomer and 17 other vendors in seven categories, five relevant to the product (adaptability, capability, manageability, reliability and usability) and two related to the vendor (TCO/ROI and vendor validation).
In the overall DataOps Buyers Guide, our analysis classified Astronomer as a vendor of Merit, receiving an overall grade of C++ with a 52.4% performance. Astronomer’s best grouped results came in Customer Experience with a 64.2% performance and B grade due in part to its B in Validation. In Product Experience, Astronomer received a C++ with a 50.3% performance due to its 42.5% performance in Capability. Astronomer received an A- in Reliability and a B+ in Adaptability. Astronomer did not participate in the RFI process.
Astronomer’s C++ grade in Product Experience was impacted by its C in Capability, which could be improved by adding data observability functionality and enhancing data pipeline development. Customer Experience was impacted by its B grade in TCO/ROI where it could increase investment and improve information about its tooling.
Astronomer performed best in Customer Experience, notably in Validation, receiving a B in both due to its product roadmap and services. In Product Experience, it did well with a C++, most notably in Reliability, specifically in technology architecture and operations, scalability and continuity.
In the Data Orchestration Buyers Guide, our analysis classified Astronomer as an Innovative vendor, receiving an overall grade of B with a 67.2% performance. Astronomer’s best grouped results came in Product Experience at 67.9% performance and a B grade due in part to its A- in Reliability. In Customer Experience, Astronomer received a B grade with a 64.2% performance due to its 67.7% performance in Validation. Astronomer achieved a B+ in Adaptability and Capability and a B- in TCO/ROI. Astronomer did not participate in the RFI process.
Astronomer’s B grade in Product Experience was impacted by its C+ in Usability where it could improve accessibility and the overall user experience. Customer Experience was impacted by its B- grade in TCO/ROI where it could better articulate the business case and provide tools for customers to calculate costs.
Astronomer performed best in Product Experience with a B grade, notably in Reliability where it received an A- due to its focus on technology architecture and operations, as well as scalability. In Capability, pipeline management and workflow management are strengths. Astronomer’s focus on configuration and APIs led to its B+ grade in Adaptability.
In the Data Pipelines Buyers Guide, our analysis classified Astronomer as a vendor of Merit, receiving an overall grade of B- with a 58.0% performance. Astronomer’s best grouped results came in Customer Experience at 64.2% performance and B grade due in part to its B in Validation. In Product Experience, Astronomer received a B- with a 56.4% performance due to its 82.4% performance in Reliability. Astronomer received a B+ for Adaptability and a B- for Manageability. Astronomer did not participate in the RFI process.
Astronomer’s B- grade in Product Experience was impacted by its C+ in Capability where it could enhance pipeline testing and deployment. Customer Experience was impacted by its B- grade in TCO/ROI where it could better assist customers in building a business case and enhance its tools for calculating costs.
