Ventana Research Unveils Next-Generation Learning Management Benchmark Research

Written by ISG Software Research | Jan 15, 2015
SAN RAMON, CA, January 15, 2015 - Ventana Research, which provides market research, best practices and business insights on the strategic and operational uses of technology across business and IT functions, today released its latest market research into next-generation learning management systems. Today learning management systems are being used by 92 percent of the largest organizations (those with more than 10,000 employees) but less often by smaller ones. Organizations most often (46%) use them for employee training and for compliance training in various corporate and regulatory policies.

Learning management is increasingly vital to businesses for training, compliance, onboarding and performance management. Employees at any skill level need to be able to use it, and our research finds that usability is the most important product evaluation criterion in 61 percent of organizations. The research also detects a transformation of learning management from stand-alone systems to being integrated with talent management along with recruiting, onboarding, performance management and succession management applications; to date, however, fewer than one-quarter (22%) of organizations have integrated them.

The new research examined the impact of and interest in six next-generation technological advancements on business use of learning management systems. It also examined how an intersection of technologies will impact an organization's ability to keep employees engaged and trained to meet their responsibilities and career aspirations.

Among the next-generation technologies at the top of the list is analytics (important to 60%), followed by collaboration (50%) and mobile technology (49%). While organizations indicated that these technologies are priorities, most are not yet fully engaged in using them. For example, only 37 percent are satisfied with their current use of analytics for learning management. Only 22 percent of organizations have embedded social collaboration in learning management and are using it today. Mobile technology is being used by 35 percent of organizations, but the research finds significant growth in business adoption of netbooks, smartphones and tablets over the next year that will press vendors to make learning management available on these devices.

The research also examined the emergence of social learning systems. "We find that 78 percent of organizations are investing in social learning to improve employee engagement, which demonstrates the strategic nature of these investments," said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer. "It is exciting that the top benefit for 72 percent of organizations using social learning is creating more effective workers. This potential should inspire every organization to use learning management strategically and not just for training purposes."

This benchmark research identified the emerging uses of these new approaches to learning in businesses. It determined needs and identified best practices as well as dead-end approaches to be avoided.
