San Ramon, Calif. – January 11, 2012 – Ventana Research’s newest benchmark research and education, Business Analytics in Government, finds that stale, outdated, and inaccurate data plague government efforts in use of analytics.
This in-depth benchmark research on business analytics, the latest from the leading business technology research firm, assessed the maturity and competency of organizations at every level in government. Ventana Research undertook this benchmark research to acquire real-world information about levels of maturity in this sector, trends and best practices in how government organizations use business analytics. It explores how they do this now, how they view their existing processes and tools, plans they have to change or improve them, and the benefit they hope to gain by doing so.
This new research found that a majority in government say their data is stale or outdated (52 percent) and only somewhat accurate or somewhat inaccurate (58 percent). This leads to 32 percent of government being only somewhat confident or not confident in the quality of their analytics. In broader terms, nearly as many government organizations are not satisfied with the process currently used to create analytics (40 percent) as are satisfied with it (43 percent).
“Our research found that an overwhelming 65 percent of government use spreadsheets to generate analytics and is a contributing factor to its worst analytic maturity in the industry,” said Mark Smith, CEO and Chief Research Officer of Ventana Research. “Time and time again, we find that spreadsheets are responsible for stale or inaccurate data and contribute to the lack of maturity and efficiency in business processes. This new research details how government and its departments can mature and make improvements with the help of accurate, accessible and easy-to-use analytics.”
