Ventana Research Releases the 2014 Value Index for Mobile Business Intelligence

Written by ISG Software Research | Jan 29, 2014
San Ramon, Calif. – January 29, 2014- Ventana Research today released its 2014 Value Index for Mobile Business Intelligence, the first quantified, research-based Index evaluating technology vendors and products for mobile business intelligence. Using this new Value Index, business and IT organizations will be able to evaluate business intelligence on mobile technologies and examine software vendors’ offerings, enabling buyers to assess product offerings based on a deeper understanding of how the technology can address their business requirements.

Ventana Research’s Value Indexes are the product of more than two decades of experience and knowledge of the market and of in-depth analyses of technology suppliers' products. The Value Index for Mobile Business Intelligence is based on a comprehensive examination of vendors’ products and their ability to support the full span of processes and methodologies used in business intelligence within smartphone and tablet environments from Apple, Google Android, RIM BlackBerry and Microsoft Surface. The Value index assessment process examines the support for interactivity and visualization, customization of presentation and support for a variety of roles including users, analysts and IT. Making informed investments in such software will maximize an organization’s accessibility to metrics from analytics and information to be better informed and where needed take action and make decisions.

In the 2014 Value Index for Mobile Business Intelligence, the companies that deliver the highest value on an overall weighted-evaluation basis are MicroStrategy, which qualifies as a Hot vendor, followed by 10 other Hot vendors: IBM, SAP, QlikTech, Information Builders, Yellowfin, Tableau Software, Roambi, SAS, Oracle and arcplan. Five vendors were rated as Warm: Actuate, Pentaho, Jaspersoft, Logi Analytics and Birst.

The Value Index is the result of a detailed evaluation of the suitability-to-task of each offering’s capabilities as well as the product’s support of usability, manageability, reliability and adaptability. These aspects of the evaluation reflect how organizations conduct RFI/RFP; they are unique to the Value Index report and are not covered to any depth in other analyst firm ratings that have limited or no evaluation of actual products but examine more on customers and revenue of the vendor.

The Index also assesses the effectiveness of each vendor’s support for the buying process and customer assurance. It gauges the value offered by a vendor and its products and presents the results in a clear and accessible graphic representation of a thermometer and in a precise numerical index. Technology vendors earning the highest "Hot" and "Warm" Vendor classifications are those that Ventana Research certifies as most or more able to deliver buyer value, based on a thorough evaluation and audit – that is, based on research and verifiable facts. The Value Index is not just a selection of "cool" products, and rather than evaluating a vendor primarily on its vision or market execution, the Index provides specific numerical ratings, both overall and for each of the seven components of the Value Index, for a technology buyer to consider. Organizations can use the Value Index as a guide to assess existing technology providers and determine if their provider best meets their needs today and in the future.

“Supporting the needs of business to gain access to information from analytics using smartphones and tablets is a necessity today,” noted Tony Cosentino, vice president and research director, Business Analytics. “Organizations cannot be effective if they have to rely only on business intelligence delivered through desktop-based dashboards and reports. Mobile devices are part of how business operates today.”

“Our firm is committed to providing fact-based and hands-on evaluation of technology and our new Value Index once again delivers on that commitment. We work to ensure that business decision-makers have useful analysis of vendors and products available to enable the most effective possible assessment of mobile business intelligence,” said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. “We are excited to have produced the first in-depth analysis of mobile business intelligence, a research-based evaluation that actually examines the technology as is it used in the real world across the variety of mobile device options – something that is more than a checklist summary analysis of vendors.”

This new Value Index is a fully independent research-based undertaking. It is neither sponsored nor influenced by technology vendors and is conducted solely in pursuit of Ventana Research's mission to provide value to business and IT through benchmark assessments, workshops and advisory services. Ventana Research's goal is to help guide organizations to optimal efficiency in their use of technology investments for business and IT.
