Ventana Research Delivers Benchmark Research on Operational Intelligence and CEP

Written by ISG Software Research | Mar 12, 2009

PLEASANTON, Calif.— March 12, 2009 —Ventana Research today released the findings of its benchmark research on Operational Intelligence and Complex Event Processing (CEP), the first research to benchmark the maturity and direction of the emerging business and IT use of events to guide business decision-making and action. The research is significant because today’s demand-driven global economy runs on timely, relevant information about events and so requires processes and technologies to not just monitor but act and respond to them effectively.

Operating a globally dispersed organization in these challenging economic times, it is critical to be able to act decisively as soon as events require it. To accomplish this requires new approaches to the transmission and availability of data about those events across networks and new tools to speed effective decision-making. Following in its tradition of exploring the frontiers of performance management and process improvement, Ventana Research conducted this benchmark research to determine the maturity of business use of tools and processes for operational intelligence and CEP, including business activity and process monitoring, rules, modeling. The research examined how both business units and IT use information about events, the range of analytics and applications used to derive business benefits from the event information and how both business management and IT view the effectiveness of their organization’s ability to act and respond to events.

In this new research, Ventana Research found significant demand among businesses today for operational intelligence – the set of event-centered information and analytic processes operating across the organization’s network that enable people to choose effective actions quickly and make better decisions. The benchmark research found that among potential areas where this approach could be applied, customer-focused efforts were top priorities in 45% of organizations, driven by the importance of timely responses to events for contact center and customer experience management. However, the research also found that managing risk and complying with regulations and service level agreements (SLA) were also important areas in which to utilize events to support effective decision-making.

“Today’s business depends on information that can be delivered on a timely basis to optimize business processes and reduce costs, and these are key benefits for operational intelligence,” said Mark Smith, Ventana Research’s CEO and executive vice president of research. “Much more frequent time-based and threshold-based metrics increasingly are top priorities for improving operational effectiveness. This research, the first of its kind, found that technology for operational intelligence is critical to support these types of metrics and performance management for IT and business.”

Ventana Research will detail the findings of this benchmark research in a live interactive webinar on March 26th at 11am Pacific time that will discuss the research findings and recommendations for improvement:
