The learning management system (LMS) technology market has evolved dramatically over the past two decades, accelerating exponentially because of shifts in employer and worker expectations that occurred during the pandemic and continue today. LMS is an integral resource for any organization concerned with productivity, organizational agility, and operational excellence. These technologies enable organizations to demonstrate an investment in people, as the LMS not only facilitates regulatory and legal compliance and other forms of cost and risk avoidance but also improves internal mobility, career growth, and the employee experience, leading to improved productivity, engagement, and retention.
Organizations are becoming increasingly interested in software that suggests content based on an employee’s interests, usage patterns, and feedback, reflective of the continued movement toward consumerization of the experience in HCM technology products. More and more, organizations desire an LMS that not only provides relevant and appealing content to learners but delivers it via the medium the learner prefers, whether video, audio, written material, or a combination of the three. In addition, organizations are delivering smaller pieces of content to support “just in time” and “in the flow of work” learning and are gravitating toward content that can be consumed in short increments, sometimes in 10 minutes or less. Technology providers have made significant advances in how organizations create, curate, and deliver content, and AI/ML capabilities have revolutionized how and where content is recommended to the learners consuming it. As a result, organizations can optimize learning outcomes, tie those outcomes to productivity, and maximize ROI.
The market report on the Learning Management Value Index is the distillation of over a year of market and product research efforts by Ventana Research. It is an assessment of how well vendors’ offerings will address buyers’ requirements for learning management software. The Index is structured to replicate an RFI/RFP process by incorporating all criteria needed to evaluate, select, utilize, and maintain technology, as well as maintain relationships with vendors.
“The ways that organizations are choosing to infuse learning into their workplaces have evolved significantly over the past three years,” said Quincy Valencia, VP and Research Director at Ventana Research. “Buyers are understandably overwhelmed by new terminology, updates in technological capabilities, and overlapping marketing messages from different vendors. The Ventana Research Learning Management Value Index should enable them to quiet the noise and be guided toward the right solution for their specific needs.”
The 2023 Learning Management Value Index finds Cornerstone OnDemand first on the list, with PeopleFluent in second place and Docebo in third. Companies that place in the top three in each category earn the designation Value Index Leader. Cornerstone OnDemand has done so in seven categories, Oracle in four, SAP and PeopleFluent in two, with Docebo, Adobe, Degreed, and Workday each placing in one category. All are Value Index Leaders in those categories.
The Value Index, through the thorough analysis of product and customer experience, has categorized vendors into four classifications: Exemplary, Innovative, Assurance, and Merit. This Value Index representation classifies vendors’ weighted performance in Product Experience and Customer Experience. The vendors awarded Exemplary are Cornerstone OnDemand, CrossKnowledge, Docebo, and SAP. The vendors awarded Innovative are Absorb, Adobe, Degreed, and PeopleFluent. The vendors awarded Assurance are 360Learning, D2L, and Oracle. The vendors awarded Merit are Axonify, Cegid Group, and Workday.
“Learning is at the center of every worker reaching their full potential, and using the proper technology is essential to ensuring the learning experience is impactful,” said Mark Smith, CEO and Chief Research Officer at Ventana Research. “Our Value Index is an effective guide for organizations to assess and evaluate vendors on their products and their ability to manage relationships through the customer experience it provides.”
Unlike many IT analyst firms that rank vendors from an IT-only perspective or consider futures or vision over what is available in the products today, Ventana Research has designed the Value Index to provide a balanced perspective of vendors and products rooted in an understanding of business drivers and needs. This approach not only reduces cost and time but also minimizes the risk of making a decision that is bad for the business. Using the Value Index enables your organization to use learning management to achieve the levels of organizational efficiency and effectiveness needed for engaging digital experiences to meet your buyer, consumer, customer, and partner needs.
The Learning Management Value Index is neither sponsored nor influenced by technology vendors and is conducted solely in pursuit of Ventana Research's mission to provide value to businesses and IT through advisory services, benchmark assessments, and workshops. Ventana Research's goal is to help guide organizations to optimal efficiency in their use of technology investments for business and IT.
