Ventana Research Publishes Analytic Data Platforms Value Index
Independent analysis of analytic data platform software rates technology providers that support analytic needs across seven product and customer experience evaluation categories
Ventana Research today released its 2023 Analytic Data Platforms Value Index, a quantified, research-based index evaluating technology providers and products. This Value Index assesses 14 vendors’ products using our Ventana Research methodology and blueprint, evaluating software in seven key categories that are weighted to reflect buyers’ needs based on our expertise and research. The Value Index evaluated the maturity of software vendors and products and their value for enterprise use as analytic data platforms. This Value Index report assesses the following vendors that offer products that address key elements of data platforms to support analytic workloads: Actian, Amazon Web Services, Cloudera, Databricks, EDB, Google, IBM, MariaDB, Micro Focus, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, Snowflake and Teradata.
As organizations strive to be more data-driven, increasing their reliance on data as a fundamental factor in business decision-making, the importance of the analytic data platform has never been greater. Analytic data platforms are designed to store, manage, process, and analyze data across on-premises, hybrid, and multi-cloud environments, enabling organizations to leverage data to operate with greater efficiency. Analytic data platforms support applications used to analyze the business, including decision support, business intelligence (BI), data science, and artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). They include real-time analytics data engines, data warehouses and data lakes as well as the increasing convergence of data warehouse, data lake and data-streaming technologies.
Analytic data platforms play a fundamental role in enabling businesses to generate value from their accumulated data, supporting BI and data science initiatives that are used to evaluate the business with a view to increasing efficiency, as well as identifying and responding to new business challenges and opportunities. The Analytic Data Platforms Value Index is the distillation of over a year of market and product research efforts by Ventana Research. It is an assessment of how well vendors’ offerings will address buyers’ requirements for analytic data platforms. The index is structured to replicate an RFI/RFP process by incorporating all criteria needed to evaluate, select, utilize and maintain technology, and maintain relationships with vendors.

The Analytic Data Platforms Value Index finds IBM first on the list, with Oracle in second place and Microsoft in third. Companies that place in the top three in any category earn the designation Value Index Leader. IBM has done so in five of the seven categories; Oracle in three; Actian, Amazon Web Services, Databricks and Teradata in two and MariaDB, Micro Focus and SAP in one category. All nine companies are Value Index Leaders.
The Value Index, through the thorough analysis of product and customer experience, has categorized vendors into four classifications: Exemplary, Innovative, Assurance and Merit. This Value Index representation classifies vendors’ weighted performance in Product Experience and Customer Experience. The vendors awarded Exemplary are IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP. The vendors awarded Innovative are Actian, Micro Focus and Teradata. The vendors awarded Assurance are Amazon Web Services, Databricks and Google. The vendors awarded Merit are Cloudera, EDB, MariaDB and Snowflake.
