Ventana Research Releases 2016 Value Index for Mobile Analytics and Business Intelligence

Written by ISG Software Research | Sep 09, 2016

BEND, OR, September 9, 2016 - Ventana Research today released its 2016 Value Index for Mobile Analytics and Business Intelligence, the only quantified, research-based index evaluating technology vendors and products. The Mobile BI Value Index assesses software operating on mobile technology devices. Mobile analytics and business intelligence provides the ability to access analytics and business intelligence tools through mobile devices at any location. Information availability at any time or place is a critical element for successful mobile deployments. However, the value of analytics and business intelligence, mobile or otherwise, is not its mere availability but the business benefits achieved through its use. Using this Value Index, business and IT organizations will be able to evaluate existing analytics and business intelligence software and examine software vendors' offerings in the context of their own business and technology requirements.

Ventana Research's Value Indexes are the products of more than two decades of experience in and knowledge of the market for analytics and business intelligence software and mobile technology and it provides an in-depth analyses of technology suppliers' products. The Value Index for Mobile Analytics and Business Intelligence is based on a comprehensive examination of 13 vendors' products in seven evaluation categories, five that evaluate the products' ability to support the full compensation process and two that address vendor validation and total cost of ownership/return on investment. Making informed investments in such software can maximize an organization's ability to optimize business outcomes and processes.

The 2016 Value Index for Mobile Analytics and Business Intelligence finds that the companies that deliver the highest value, based on an overall weighted evaluation, was Information Builders, which qualifies as a Hot vendor, followed by six vendors classified as Warm: MicroStrategy, Yellowfin, Logi Analytics, Domo, IBM and Qlik, followed by six vendors classified as Cold: SAS Institute, SAP, Tableau Software, Microsoft, Oracle and Salesforce.

Each Value Index is the result of a detailed evaluation of the suitability-to-task of each offering's capabilities as well as the product's support of usability, manageability, reliability and adaptability. These aspects of the evaluation reflect how organizations conduct RFI/RFP; they are unique to the Value Index report and are not covered in depth by other analyst firms' ratings, which often include limited (or no) evaluation of actual products. IT analyst firms rank vendors from an IT-only perspective, Ventana Research has designed the Value Index to provide a balanced perspective of vendors and products that is rooted in an understanding of business drivers and needs. This approach not only reduces cost and time but also minimizes the risk of making a decision that is bad for the business. Using the Value Index will enable your organization to achieve the levels of efficiency and effectiveness needed to optimize mobile analytics and business intelligence.

The Value Index also assesses the effectiveness of each vendor's support for the buying process and customer assurance. It gauges the value offered by a vendor and its products and presents the results in a clear and accessible graphic representation of a thermometer and in a precise numerical index. Technology vendors earning the highest Hot and Warm vendor classifications are those that Ventana Research certifies as most or more-able to deliver value to buyers based on a thorough evaluation and audit - that is, based on research and verifiable facts. The Value Index is not just a selection of "cool" products; rather than evaluating a vendor primarily on its vision or market execution, the Index provides specific numerical ratings, both overall and for each of the seven components of the Value Index, for technology buyers to consider. Organizations can use the Value Index as a guide to assess existing technology providers and determine if their provider best meets their needs today and in the future.

"Mobile technology has become a standard piece of technology used in organizations and specific smartphones and tablets are used in the workplace and outside of it from business applications to analytics and business intelligence." said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. "As this Value Index research finds that the mobile devices from Apple or that use Android or Microsoft environments are challenging vendors to keep pace and those that invest into operating on these mobile devices will gain new business opportunity.”

“Mobile business intelligence and analytics are no longer optional capabilities. Our research uncovered extensive use of mobile business intelligence with more than four out of five (82%) organizations in our data and analytics in the cloud research accessing analytics and BI via mobile technology,” said David Menninger, SVP and research director at Ventana Research. “This research enables organizations to compare and assess mobile BI and analytics software with in-depth insight based on a balanced set of real world evaluation criteria. Unlike other analyst firms’ abstract assessments along two dimensions, our evaluation reports ratings in seven categories of vendor and product performance that are applicable to every organization’s needs.”

This new Value Index is a fully independent, research-based undertaking. It is neither sponsored nor influenced by technology vendors and is conducted solely in pursuit of Ventana Research's mission to provide value to business and IT through benchmark assessments, workshops and advisory services. Ventana Research's goal is to help guide organizations to optimal efficiency in their use of technology investments for business and IT.
